A shed is typically a simple, single story structure in back garden or on an allocation that is used for storage, hobbies or as a workshop. Shed vary significantly in convolution of their structure and their size like for small open ended tin roofed structures to large wood framed sheds with single roofs, windows and electric outlets. Sheds used on farms or in industry can have large structures. There are two types of sheds.
Small Domestic Sheds
These are simplest and least expensive sheds available in kit form. Both shed kits and “do-it-yourself” plans are offered for wooden and plastic sheds. Domestic sheds are used to store home and garden tools as well as equipment like push lawn mowers, lawn tractors and other garden supplies. Various items and products which are not suitable for indoor storage like gasoline, pesticides or herbicides can easily store in sheds. There are various types of sheds for homes with small gardens or modest storage needs. These include:
- Corner sheds (3” tall x 3” wide x 2” deep) to fit into a corner.
- Vertical sheds (5” tall x 3” wide x 4” deep)
- Horizontal sheds (3” tall x 5” wide x 4” deep)
- Tool sheds (Often used to maximize storage space)
There is another style shed which is Gambrel style roofed sheds, resemble with a Dutch style barn and have a high sloping roofline which increases storage space in “loft”. Another style of small shed is saltbox style shed.
Large Domestic Sheds
Large and more expensive sheds are typically created with wood and have typical features in house construction like windows, a shingled roof and electrical outlets. Larger sheds facilitate users with more space for engaging in hobbies like gardening, small engine repair or tinkering. Some sheds have small porches or incorporate furniture that allows them to be used for relaxation purpose. In some cases teleworkers and homeworkers who typically live in mild climates use small to medium sized wooden garden sheds as outdoor offices. Shed owners can modify wooden sheds to match features of main house.
Various decorated options can also be added to sheds like as dormers, shutters, flowerboxes, finials and weathervanes. In addition, these practical options can be added like as benches, ramps, ventilation systems (If the swimming pool heater is installed in a shed) and electric lighting. Potting sheds are especially designed for gardening and often feature windows or skylights for illumination, ventilation grilles and a potter’s bench for mixing soil and re-potting plants.
